Why has my muscle mass returned so quickly with weight lifting?

I have not trained in 4 years and in 2 weeks of training so far my muscles are returning really quickly. I thought it would take a while for me to notice any difference what with the long break from training. I was wondering if you could explain why this is happening so quickly.

Thanks,

Pete

"Muscle Memory"
by: The Middle Manager

Pete, "why" questions are tough to answer. A lot of it could depend on your age, past experience, nutrition changes, etc.

One likely reason is called "muscle memory." Muscle memory occurs when a person looses much of their hard-earned muscle mass during a lengthy layoff and quickly regains much of that muscle once they return to training. Often, regaining the muscle occurs more quickly than was required when building muscle before the layoff. One theory suggests that the body cannibalizes muscle proteins for energy during the layoff while maintaining the increased number of nucleii that body produced during strength training prior to the layoff. These nucleii allow protein synthesis to occur more rapidly when weight training and proper nutrition is re-introduced.
