Your son shouldn't drink or eat anything right before a workout unless he is starving himself. When you eat or drink things before a workout valuable blood is used in digesting your food and it will prove to be difficult, when he is lifting because his stomach will be bloated, but afterward a protein shake or other foods high in protein would be a good idea.

Workout Fuel
by: Tom

One of the best things to eat before a workout is a glass of skim milk. Skim milk provides many nutrients, but most importantly protein. It also provides a lot of calcium. Protein is important since it is used in muscle and energy synthesis, but drinking skim milk is recommended since it provides hydration, which is important before and during any exercise. Skim milk is chosen since it also contains no fat, and provides a moderate amount of calories and carbohydrates, which also fuel the body.
