What exact muscles are being worked when performing an oblique crunch?.

by Katherine
(Manchester, NH)

When you perform an oblique crunch lying on floor legs bent and crunch to the right side, is it the external oblique and multifidus which is recruited mostly on the left side and the internal oblique mostly on the right side or all oblique fibers evenly on both sides.

Oblique Observations...
by: The Middle Manager

Katherine, it is the oblique only on the side you are working. So if you are lying on your left side and lifting your body upward on the right, then it is the right side oblique. This is why you have to do the exercise lying on both sides.

It works both the internal and external obliques on the side being worked.

When you see a workout such as the Middle Mangement™ Best Ab Workout, and it says 2 sets of 20, that means 20 reps for each side.

The picture above shows where the muscles of the abdominal region are located.
