Lose Weight But Keep Muscle?

by Chris
(Virginia)

Hello,

I am trying to lean myself out, but seem to only drop a little fat, then strip off muscle whenever I start to hit the cardio hard.

I was running for only 20min each morning on an empty stomach, and lifting most nights. I was eating about 2500 calories a day with about 160g of protein, and I lost 7 lbs in a week..clearly not healthy, and most of the weight was muscle, as indicated by the minimal bf% decrease.

When I begin cutting again, should I up my calories, up my protein only, or maybe do cardio every other day rather than each day, combined with heavy lifting every other day?

Thanks for the help.

You can cut and gain muscle at the same time.

Actually it is possible to cut and gain at the same time. And not much cardio involved. The key is DIET my friend. This guy by the name of Mark came up with an ingenious diet that helps to maintain muscle and cut at same time due to a certain nutrient ratio intake. Its at www.musclehack.com . I downloaded the ebook for free and havent looked back since. I've been lifting for 5 years though :)

Glutamine
by: Michael

Supplement with Branched Chained Amino Acids (BCAAs)...take them before you run in the morning (30 min before) and during your run and after your workout ..BCAAs get released in the bloodstream and this tricks the body into thinking that muscle has been broken down to be used for energy and when this happens and it hits the killswitch on breaking down skeletal muscle to be burned for energy and instead it starts to break down fat for energy. So this in turn helps to burn more fat while helping to preserve muscle. Also, supplement with L-Glutamine before you work out and use after you work out and before you go to bed. Glutamine and HIGHLY effective at retaining muscle while on a cut considering skeletal muscle is comprised of mostly glutamine...any questions feel free to email me ..drake3205@yahoo.com

my friends told me its good to run in the morning like that on an empty stomach to get your metabolism started and going. but lifting weights at night i dont know if thats good because your practically draining your energy then go to sleep.
eat 1500 calories and 35-45g's of protein but only take the protein if you muscle are hurting. i dont know really but this is mostly what my friend told me before

Maintain

This doesn't seem to really answer the initial question. The question I read was how to lose fat and maintain your current muscle, not to gain muscle.

Cutting and gaining muscle
by: Anonymous

When your in your cutting stage your goal is to get lean. In this stage it is very hard to increase muscle mass because you will be a a calorie deficit. You have to be carfull doing to much cardo because your body will start to burn muscle for energy. The same goes for doing cardio on an empty stomach. My best advice is to bulk( Lift and eat alot to pack on muscle....healthy foods) and then go to the cutting phase to lean out. It almost impossiable to cut and gain at the same time.
