Lose Weight But Keep Muscle?

by Chris
(Virginia)

Hello,

I am trying to lean myself out, but seem to only drop a little fat, then strip off muscle whenever I start to hit the cardio hard.

I was running for only 20min each morning on an empty stomach, and lifting most nights. I was eating about 2500 calories a day with about 160g of protein, and I lost 7 lbs in a week..clearly not healthy, and most of the weight was muscle, as indicated by the minimal bf% decrease.

When I begin cutting again, should I up my calories, up my protein only, or maybe do cardio every other day rather than each day, combined with heavy lifting every other day?

Thanks for the help.

Cutting and gaining muscle
by: Anonymous

When your in your cutting stage your goal is to get lean. In this stage it is very hard to increase muscle mass because you will be a a calorie deficit. You have to be carfull doing to much cardo because your body will start to burn muscle for energy. The same goes for doing cardio on an empty stomach. My best advice is to bulk( Lift and eat alot to pack on muscle....healthy foods) and then go to the cutting phase to lean out. It almost impossiable to cut and gain at the same time.
