Is it normal to get bigger before getting smaller with strength training?

I have been doing approx. 2-3 days strength training (1 day with a personal trainer) and 2 days cardio a week for 7 weeks and not only have I not dropped a pound, my legs and arms are getting bigger. I went up an entire pant size. Is this normal?
I have also been watching my calorie intake, small meals with protein 4 times a day and no carbs after 3:00pm.

It is possible (and maybe even likely) that you build muscle and get bigger, particularly if you haven't been exposed to a lot of strength training previously.

This is why we encourage measuring something like body fat percentage rather than weight to determine success. Muscle is more dense than fat, and you can lose fat and build muscle, without losing any weight.

So, without knowing your specifics, it is definitely possible to build muscle and get bigger arms and legs when strength training.
