Depends on Diet
by: Anonymous

How much you will lose cannot be determined simply by the machine readouts on calories burned. For example, if you "lost" 599 calories in a workout, but were so hungry that you ate a 900 calorie cheeseburger on the way home, you would gain weight.

If your current diet has more than 599 calories in excess of what you need to maintain your current weight, you will not lose weight. Weight may also depend on the process of converting fat to muscle. Even though this is desirable, muscle weighs more than fat and you may seem to freeze or even gain a little with the beginning of this process. If you are restricting your calories too much, you also risk having your hypothalamus go into starvation mode and slow your , metabolism which will hamper weight loss. Twenty pounds in a month is more than is usually recommended for optimum weight loss from diet and exercise alone. It would be fine after bariatric surgery, but the usual standard is losing about two to three pounds per week. That would make 12 pounds in one month about the most to aim for, although you may lose more the first week.

Most gyms and health clubs offer nutritional counseling and can assist you with a sane diet that is safe and realistic, so take advantage of that, or consult your regular doctor for guidance. The best plan of all is to create a healthy eating plan that is balanced and high quality as a lifestyle. That along with regular exercise is more likely to let you reach your goal and maintain a normal weight.

Best wishes for your success!

Calorie Deficits and Weight Loss
by: The Middle Manager

The answer largely depends on how much you are eating. The key to losing weight is to have a calorie deficit - burn more calories than you eat.

So, lets say you weren't gaining weight before you started going to the gym, and you are not eating any more. As a result you have a 599 calorie deficit for 2 to 3 days each week. Would you lose 20 pounds in a month?

The short answer is probably not. You need to have a calorie deficit of 3500 calories to lose 1 pound. That means to lose 1 pound in a week, you need to have a 500 calorie deficit per day for all 7 days. Over the course of the month, that would be only 4 to 5 pounds lost.

At a 599 calories deficit for 3 days, you would have a weekly deficit of 1797 calorie deficit for the week. This means that you would lose only a pound or two every two weeks.
