How fast can I lose?

by Rob Ryan

I have seen information saying an average sized person should try and lose fat at a rate of not more than 1-2 lbs per week. I have also seen information saying 1/2 - 1 % body fat per month. But that math just doesn't work. I'm 180lbs and using fat calipers figure I'm at about 12% body fat. So, that should mean I have around 21.6 lbs of fat on me. My goal of around 6% body fat means I need to lose 6% body fat or 10.8 lbs of fat. So, my question is can I expect to see results and achieve my goal in as little as 5 weeks losing say 2 lbs per week, or do I need to be prepared for results in more like 6 months assuming 1% body fat per month. Or, is it possible I have missed something all together and am just way off. I'd love some advice from those more knowledgeable than me, which is most everyone.

Thanks,
Rob

Slow and steady beats the quick fad

You have asked a very good question that I have often asked myself. After much research I have found that the "safe" way to lose weight is at about 1 to 1 1/2 lb. a week. Those products that promise quick weight loss are filled with diaretics so you lose water weight fast - but get is back just as fast. A good diet, low in fat and sugar and salt, and a good moderate exercise program will let you lose weight, albeit slowly, but you will keep the weight off because you are changing your lifestyle.
