At what BF% should I look to start adding muscle after a fat loss routine?

by Michael Rautenbach
(Cape Town South Africa)

I have dropped for 23 to 17% BF and feel and look a lot better. 98% of my weight loss came directly from fat by using both weights and cardio along with a sensible nutrition plan. I would now like to start packing on muscle, which obviously requires a calorie surplus, unlike the calorie deficit i used to loose fat. I plan to eat the same foods, only more of them. My concern is that my body fat % stops dropping. I would like to get down to 10-12% as a mid term goal but dont know if i should continue with a calorie deficit until i reach 10-12% then add muscle or if in the process of adding muscle with correct nutririon my BF% will drop?

Also Remember...
by: The Middle Manager

Also remember, that if you maintain your current body fat and add muscle, your overall body fat percentage will drop, but probably not as fast as you would like.

You will only begin to see your abs once you get to around 10% body fat. Overall, I agree with the post below, cut down another few body fat percents and then start adding muscle, making sure your diet is clean so that you are sure you are adding weight from muscle rather than fat.

Add muscle once you reach 10-14%
by: Anonymous

If you aren't planning on competing, then 10-14% is the "ideal" range for non athletes. So drop another 3-5% and then aim to add pure muscle with a clean calorie surplus. As you add muscle your BF% will decrease due to the fact that your body composition has changed. Remember your six pack will only be visible at a good BF%
